Empowering local children through Operation School Bell and community support

For nearly three decades, the Assistance League of Greater Collin County (ALGCC) has been a beacon of hope, providing essential clothing to children in need through its flagship program, Operation School Bell.

Established in 1996 by 13 compassionate women, ALGCC became the 103rd chapter of the national Assistance League in 1998. Today, its 45 dedicated members, primarily retired educators and professionals, volunteer thousands of hours annually to support local children and families.

Through Operation School Bell, ALGCC partners with JCPenney to offer elementary students from Title I schools in Plano, Allen, McKinney, and Wylie ISDs the opportunity to shop for brand-new clothes. Each child receives a gift card valued between $125 and $150, allowing them to select clothing that fits their style and needs. This initiative not only provides attire but also instills confidence and a sense of belonging.

In 2024, the program served 780 children from 54 elementary schools, a testament to its significant impact on the community. The shopping experience, often a first for many participants, is guided by caring volunteers who ensure each child feels special and valued.

Beyond clothing, ALGCC's commitment extends to various philanthropic programs:

Wee Memories: Volunteers prepare bereavement memory boxes for parents grieving the loss of infants at local hospitals.

Pass the Word: Members distribute magazines and activity books to patients at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Plano, offering comfort during hospital stays.

Caring in Action: This initiative supports a range of activities, including crafting sessions for hospitalized children and providing essentials to the homeless and seniors.

Funding these programs requires approximately $120,000 annually, raised entirely through local donations and community fundraisers. Upcoming events include the Ugly Sweater Wine Walk at Watters Creek on December 4, 2025, and the annual spring luncheon fundraiser, "Hats Off to Assistance League," scheduled for April 11, 2026.

ALGCC is actively seeking new members to continue its mission of transforming lives through community programs. Meetings are held monthly, and members can contribute as much or as little time as they wish. As longtime member Sylvia Polhamus notes, "We may be retired, but we're not done giving back."

To donate, volunteer, or learn more, visit their office at 200 Chisholm Place, Suite 105, Plano, TX 75075. Together, we can ensure that every child has the opportunity to feel confident and succeed.
