Denton Launches 911 Drone Pilot Through October

Denton Police and Denton Fire have launched a month-long Drone as First Responder pilot aimed at putting useful eyes over certain emergencies before ground crews arrive.

The pilot began Oct. 1 and is scheduled to continue through Oct. 31.

Certified public-safety pilots can launch Skydio X10 drones from ready-to-use docking stations within seconds of selected 911 calls.

Those calls may include traffic crashes, critically missing people, robberies in progress and structure fires.

Live video can be sent to pilots working in the city’s 911 dispatch center, giving responders more information while police officers or firefighters are still traveling to the scene.

The idea is not to replace first responders, but to improve what they know before they arrive.

Denton has used transported drones since 2022 for searches, crash and fire mapping, prescribed-burn monitoring and other public-safety work.

The new model tests whether docked aircraft can reduce launch time and provide earlier situational awareness.

Every pilot flight must be connected to a 911 call for service, and the city says flight activity and data will be recorded.

A public transparency dashboard is part of the program, giving residents a way to review how the technology is used.

The October trial gives Denton a defined window to measure response value, operational limits and public accountability before deciding what comes next.
